Question from a concerned VCD creator

Dear Dr. Kilgore, I am trying to play a 24fps VCD in my DVD player and its seems jerky can you offer any insight? signed Skippin' Frames in Boca Raton

Dr. Kilgore says: Dear Skippin, The problem is this, you are a moron. If you had done your homework you would know that the standard frame rates for video are 25fps for PAL and 29.97 for NTSC. The fact that your VCD plays at all is a fluke. If your DVD player does play it you'll notice that not only is it jerky but it plays a bit fast. So a 2 hour movie is more like 1:45. I suggest that you use a third party program such as Media Studio Pro to convert the file to 29.97fps. Sure you'll lose a bit of sharpness in the process, but if you are that worried about it, buy the movie on DVD.

Captain Bob says: Skippin', Standalone VCD players DO play 24 fps, because they use a hardware enabled 3:2 pulldown. DVD players can only do this if the video file itself is encoded with a 3:2 pulldown. This will NOT work on a VCD because MPEG-1 does not support the option.
